• Name Meaning: Roaring Meg refers to a large cannon and was the name of several powerful cannons used in the 17th century, including a mortar cast in 1646 for the siege of Goodrich Castle, England and a cannon used during the Siege of Derry, Ireland in 1689. The history of the cannon spans several hundred years and it is widely known as the earliest form of gunpowder artillery, before early firearms were invented. During the Middle Ages, the cannon became standardized and more effective in both the anti-infantry and siege roles. Cannons also transformed infantry and naval warfare in the early modern period. As rifling became commonplace, the accuracy and power of cannons were significantly increased forcing infantry to adopt different tactics and ships to be armored.12
